Deacon Ministry

Whether it’s preparing elements for communion or meeting a hurting church member over a cup of coffee, we believe that one of the most elemental and vital role in the life of First Baptist is that of the deacon.

Those who have been ordained to this spiritual role have clearly acted as deacon - servants and spiritual leaders. Deacons are always on the lookout for ways to serve others. They have rejected the notion that church is about consuming religious goods and services. They are far from perfect, but persistent and hopeful that in giving of themselves they will begin to understand more fully the backwards hierarchy of the Kingdom of God.

The Greek work literally means waiter. Deacons are, then, the wait staff at First. Having a group of men who are officially serving allows church staff, ministry leaders, and member to focus on other ministry needs. At the same time, we also believe that there are those who aren’t officially serving as deacons but just as faithfully serve the Christ. In other words, a person doesn’t have to be an official deacon to be serving in the way that deacons serve. Indeed, our hope is that someday there will be no distinction between church members and the body of deacons.
