Day 3 Read: Psalm 42:1-2
As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
Reflect: How does the psalmist illustrate his longing for God?
Consider: My soul thirsts for … the living God: verse 2 follows naturally on verse 1, the psalmist using the verb thirsts as parallel to and a graphic synonym of longs in verse 1. God is called the living God, a way of distinguishing the God of Israel from the pagan gods, who were seen as powerless, impotent, dead.3
Respond: When do you long for God? What helps satisfy your longing? How has worship been encouraging to you in times of personal and spiritual “drought”?
