Day 5 Read: Ephesians 2:8-10
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Reflect: Verse 10 follows Paul’s description of our salvation. What is one of the reasons God created you?
Consider: The word “workmanship” (poiēma), used only here and in Romans 1:20 (where the NIV renders it “what has been made”) denotes a work of art or a masterpiece. It differs from human “works” (ergōn) in Ephesians 2:9. Believers are God’s workmanship because they have been created (a work only God can do) in Christ Jesus (cf. “in Christ Jesus” in vv. 6–7).5
Respond: Why do you think it is so hard for us to live as people who were designed with service in mind? What are some of the things that steal our time and attention? How does it make you feel to know that God has already prepared situations for you to do good works? Why?
