Day 5 Read: John 8:12
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Reflect: If Jesus is the Light of the world, what does that imply about the world? What does it imply about you?
Consider: The I am statement of Jesus is here followed by a predicate, the light of the world. (On the use of I am in the Gospel of John, see comments at 4:26.) I am the light of the world is often rendered “I am the one who gives light to people in the world” or “I am the one who causes light for people of the world.”5
Respond: What is light’s impact on darkness? How does darkness respond to light? Read John 3:19-21. How do John’s words in that passage speak into Jesus’ teaching in John 8:12?
